Peskov: World on verge of food crisis over Ukraine’s actions

MOSCOW, Jun 1 (PRIME) -- The world is on the verge of a food crisis because of the Western sanctions and Ukraine’s actions, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

“Potentially, we are on the edge of a deep food crisis linked to the imposition of absolutely illegitimate restrictions on one of the main global supplies, namely, us, and the actions of the Ukrainian authorities, who have mined the entrances to the Black Sea ports, and are correspondingly unable to ship wheat from them while Russia does not hinder it in any manner,” he said.

“The Turkish side and the other sides have received a detailed explanation from President (Vladimir) Putin… that Russia does not hinder, and moreover if Ukraine bothers to start mine-clearing of the ports to ensure safe marine navigation, Russia is ready to help following vessels loaded with grain to the international waters.”

Peskov also said that the E.U.’s sanctions against Russian oil will impact not only Russia and Europe, but the entire global energy market.

Russia is re-directing available oil to alternative receivers, he added.

“It is a purposeful action, a systemic one that will help us cushion the negative impact,” he said.
